“I know, but please don’t worry Lauren. I’ll figure something out. And as far as seeing me again, what does your schedule look like next weekend?”
“I have a brief due in two weeks so I will be buried in work until then.”
“Okay then, in two weeks when you have completed your brief, would you like to come visit me in New York?”
My stomach fluttered with excitement at the thought of seeing him again so soon. Of course I wanted to go visit him, but Vivienne’s pregnancy thwarted any real happiness for me. I pushed that thought out of my mind because I didn’t want to lose him, so I decided that I would just take things day by day and see where things went with us.
“I would love to come visit you Jake.” I smiled at him trying not to think about the fact that he would be leaving in a few minutes.
“Great, then it’s a date. The jet will pick you up at 8:00 Friday night. Does that time work for you?”
“That should be fine. I’ll file my brief with the court Friday morning, so yeah, it shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Perfect. Well, we should probably get going. I have to get to the airport. The jet will probably be here soon.”
We walked back to my condo and before Jake grabbed his bag he pulled me close and looked into my eyes. “I don’t want you to worry about anything, I will figure everything out. I’ll miss you while we’re apart but I can’t wait to see you in a couple of weeks.”
“I’ll miss you too.”
He leaned down to kiss me and as his lips touched mine I felt a feeling of panic as if it was the last time I would ever feel his lips on mine. Calm down Lauren. You’ll see him again in two weeks.
“I’ll give you a call to say goodnight later on tonight. I love you.”
“I love you too. Have a safe flight.”
Once the door closed behind him I sat on the couch thinking about the past couple of days. If only he hadn’t gotten that girl pregnant everything would be on its way to being perfect.
The phone rang and snapped me out of my thinking.
“How are you doing today? Any better?” Amy’s chipper voice was a welcome distraction from my thoughts.
“Oh, have I got things to tell you! Guess who showed up at my condo yesterday?”
“Oh my gosh! Who?” She was excited before she even knew anything. Amy was always my biggest supporter.
“What?! No way!!”
“Yep, he said he came for our date.”
“You guys had a date planned?”
“On the cruise, he said he would be here this Saturday but I had completely forgotten about that. And after he left the reunion early because of the Vivienne pregnancy fiasco, I just didn’t think anymore about it.”
“That is so romantic Lauren! So how was it? What did you guys do?”
“It was perfect until he told me that Vivienne’s family is putting the pressure on for him to marry her.”
“WHAT???!!! Are you serious??”
“Yeah. Her family is worried about their image and they want her to be married before she starts to show.”
“Well how far along is she?”
“You know, I never thought to ask him that.”
Amy was silent on the other end and I could feel the wheels spinning in her head.
“Lauren. Do you think she is faking the pregnancy just to get her hooks into Jake? Do you think she is that desperate?”
“I had never even taken the time to think about if her being pregnant was a lie. I suppose it’s possible but Jake would want to have some kind of proof that it was true. So I doubt that she would lie. She wouldn’t be able to get away with it.”
“You have to ask him how far along she is so that you will know how much time he has to make a decision. But I don’t think you have anything to worry about. There is no way Jake is going to marry that girl when he is in love with you. So let’s talk about happier things. What did you guys do while he was here?”
“We went out to lunch and went to the park and just spent time together. He just left a few minutes ago. It was so perfect Amy.”
“I’m so happy for you. Don’t worry, it will be perfect again.”
“I hope so. He wants me to come to New York in a couple of weeks.”
“He does? That’s perfect Lauren! See, he’s factoring you into his life. That means something. He’s not going to let you get away a second time. Trust me, I have a good feeling about this.”
“Oh, enough about me! So what about you? How was your phone date with Paul?”
“It was so much fun! I wish Paul lived closer, I really like him. He’s so easy to talk to, you know?”
